Easy Hacks for Unpacking After a Move

Moving is stressful enough without only having to then spend a few hours (or days) unpack your new home. First, you have to get all of your belongings packed up and organized so they can be transported safely, and then you need to unpack everything when you arrive at your new home.

Unpacking can be especially challenging if you’re juggling work or school with the moving process. Don’t panic! Here are some tips for getting organized and making the whole process easier.

Decide on a system before you start.

When it comes time to unpack after a move, you’ll have plenty of time to decide on a system. The best way to go about it is by taking some time to think of how you want to arrange your items and then trying out different arrangements until you find something that works for you. Knowing where everything will go and the layout before the stuff is there and unpacked can save you so much time.

Label boxes.

If you’re anything like me, one of the first things I do after moving is to unpack all my boxes. Unfortunately, as soon as I open one up and see its contents for what they are—clothes or dishes or books or whatever else—I’m too excited to start unpacking them properly. So it ends up in just piles around the place. And then I get distracted by, say, a looming deadline at work or a new season I’ve been following on Netflix. Then you end up with a bunch of random boxes strewn around your house with no idea which belongs where in your new place! To avoid this situation entirely, label every single box with either masking tape or a permanent marker before you move.

The system should be easy to remember. It doesn’t do much good if you know exactly where everything goes but then forget which bin contains what! Try using labels that are clear and visible so nothing gets lost in the shuffle when everything needs re-finding again later down the line.

Set up your closet first.

You’ll want to set up your closet first, as it’s the most important thing you’ll do. Once you’ve organized your closet, then you can work on other parts of the house. You will have a clear idea of how much space is available and how many items need to be organized in the new location.

Clear out some time.

It’s important to set aside time to complete the task. Don’t try to do it all in one day or night; this will only lead to frustration and too much stress. Instead, take breaks between moving boxes and make sure you leave room for other tasks that need doing around your new home.

Having a good system will save time and energy. You will be less stressed, you won’t waste time looking for things, and you won’t have the frustration of trying to figure out how something should go back where it belongs.
