How to Move Your Home Office

How to Move Your Home Office

Moving to another house is challenging. If you work remotely, you’ll also have to pack up your home office. The sooner you start planning and organizing, the smoother the process will be.

Figure out What to Take to Your New Office

Before you start packing, think about what you will and won’t need in your new home office. Start with the furniture. When you consider the size and layout of your future office, you might realize that certain pieces of furniture won’t fit. If you have a large desk, couch, or another heavy piece of furniture that would be expensive to move, you might decide not to take it to your new house.

Go through the rest of your home office and figure out what else to take with you. You might discover that you have folders or boxes filled with documents that you no longer need, or you might decide to save documents in electronic form and then shred the paper versions. You might also find books, equipment, artwork, and other odds and ends that you won’t need or want in your new office. You can sell, donate, or throw those things away.

Pack Strategically

If your upcoming move is several weeks or more in the future, you won’t be able to pack everything up right away. Start with items that you won’t need for a while. Those might include some documents and books. As you get closer to the move, you’ll be able to start packing up your electronic equipment and other items that you use on a regular basis.

Pack your computer and other devices in their original packaging, if you still have it. If not, get plenty of sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, and tape. Before you disconnect any cords, take photos. That will eliminate guesswork and save you time when you’re hooking things up in your new office.

Your home office most likely contains a desk, chair, filing cabinets, shelves, and other types of furniture that will have to be disassembled before the move. Refer to the manufacturers’ instructions on how to take apart your office furniture. If you don’t have those instructions, you can probably find them online. If you don’t feel comfortable disassembling your home office furniture, let professional movers handle it for you.
